Are participating in the Jigger Johnson 100k race and raising funds on behalf of Jen's Friends Cancer Foundation where 100% of monies raised goes directly to patients and families battling cancer in Mount Washington Valley
Hello! We are Josh and Emily Walker and on August 19th, 2023, we will be running a 100K race, The Jigger Johnson 100K Race, in the White Mountains/Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire. We will be running the race in memory of three loved ones we lost within a week of each other in 2021 and also running for a charity and raising funds for Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation. Jen’s Friends provides assistance to cancer patients and their families in the Mount Washington Valley of NH/ME. Our goal is to raise $3,000 to give back to Jen’s Friends to continue to help others when they need support the most. All contributions will help families in the Mount Washington Valley, where our race is taking place.

Our Story:
In April 2021, we lost three people in the same week that we were very close to. Two lost their battle to cancer in a hauntingly similar journey. Josh’s mother, Kathleen Hathaway (1964-2021), and Emily’s friend, mentor, and boss, Lauren Dow (1983-2021). Kathleen and Lauren never met but their journey with cancer paralleled closely. They both had breast cancer caused by a hereditary BRCA1 gene mutation and passed within a week of each other. Each would ask how the other was, even in the final days. They were both strong, vibrant women. In the same week, Emily lost her brother, Braden Hawley (1983-2021), due to complications from a chronic illness. In addition for running for a charity, we are running the Jigger Johnson 100k race in memory of these three loved ones, who changed the lives of many and are still greatly missed.

About Jen’s Friends:
Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation provides supplemental financial assistance and other resources to cancer patients and their families in the Mount Washington Valley who are uninsured, underinsured, or financially challenged, allowing them to focus on battling cancer without worrying about the indirect financial burdens that often arise.
Kathleen was a self-employed farmer her whole life, as her cancer progressed she couldn’t work and her health insurance lapsed. Jen’s Friends was there to step in and help provide resources to get to her doctor appointments, cancer treatments, and help with groceries and bills. Kat would always say she didn’t know what she would have done if it wasn’t for the support she received from Jen’s Friends.
Supporting Jen’s Friends:
Kathleen, like many others, benefited greatly from the support of Jen's Friends during her cancer journey and we would love to be able to help in a small way to give back and provide others with the assistance and support that Kathleen received and was very appreciative of. She always spoke very highly about all of the volunteers at Jen’s Friends and felt fortunate for the care and thoughtfulness of the community surrounding the organization. I know it truly meant a lot to her, especially in the end. It would mean a lot to us to be able to support Jen's Friends and help future families in the Mount Washington Valley in a similar way.
Please join us in supporting Jen’s Friends and help us raise $3,000 by making a gift and remembering Kathleen, Lauren, Braden, or in memory of another loved one.

Info About the Race:
We wanted a goal that would be hard, scare us a little, and be sentimental. The race, Jigger Johnson 100k, starts in the mountains of NH/ME that we grew up around. Kathleen lived right under these mountains for over 20 years and would look up at every day as she took care of the animals or worked in a hay field, she even lived at the base of the start point, the Moat Mountains, for a few years. The course is around 65 miles, climbs and loses a total of 40,000 ft of elevation change, and meanders throughout the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We must complete the race within 30 hours to be considered finishers. Our training, which we started in January, will have us run close to 2,000 miles and 700,000 feet of vertical gain in order to prepare for the race and reach the finish line on August 19th.
